Alcohol research

Purpose

The purpose is to carry out alcohol related research within health and social sciences. The alcohol research is closely related to the themes that the NIPH is working with in other areas: Health, morbidity and mortality related to alcohol, evaluation of treatments, alcohol culture and habits of the Danes. NIPH established a professorship in 2002.

Activities

  • The influence of alcohol on hospital utilisation.
  • The relationship between alcohol drinking pattern and heart disease.
  • Study of contributing factors to the development of some people into heavy drinkers.
  • Morbidity and mortality among brewery workers with specific focus on cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Over the period 1939 to 1963, 14,000 brewery workers received a daily ration of six beers. The majority chose to drink their ration. The effect of this is studied.
  • The risk of foetus malformation due to alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
  • The alcohol consumption of 4,000 Danish students in 7th, 8th and 9th grade. The project is divided into a quantitative and a qualitative part and includes an evaluation of an education programme for the National Board of Health as well.
  • Evaluation of the Minnesota treatment compared with alcohol treatment within the public health system (in co-operation with Odense University Hospital).
  • Analysis of the impact of alcohol legislation, notably on age limit on alcohol purchase and reduced taxes. The analysis focusses on the impact on adolescents.
  • The significance of serious life events (divorce, death of a spouse etc.) for the development of alcohol abuse (heavy drinkers).
